Every carrot. Every meal saved. Every second chance.
Food waste
Every day, nearly 2,200 tons of food are thrown away in Denmark, and in a large enterprise like Salling Group, food waste cannot be entirely avoided, no matter how much we'd like it to be. Whether it occurs at home or in the store, food waste is detrimental to both the environment and the economy.
Salling Group has an ambitious goal of cutting our food waste in half before 2030 while simultaneously assisting customers in reducing their waste.
Reducing food waste is thus a significant focus in all aspects of the business that we have direct control over. We are precise in our ordering of products, we reduce prices on items approaching their expiration date and we are meticulous in handling products during transportation to prevent damage that might render them unsellable in stores.
In 2016, Salling Group was also the first retail company in Denmark to openly disclose its food waste figures. Our food waste percentage has been declining since. In 2015, which is our baseline, the food waste percentage in our Danish operations was 2.81%. It decreased to 2.36% in 2022. We work every day to reduce this number further through customer inspiration, donations, and a systematic effort.
Food waste partners
Salling Group collaborates with a number of national organisations to combat food waste. Our partnerships are aimed at assisting socially vulnerable families and provide aid while simultaneously reducing our waste of both food and non-food products.
