2023: Approval of climate targets
At Salling Group, we have committed ourselves to the Paris Agreement's goal to keep the increase in the global average temperature below 1.5 degrees. The objectives we have set to achieve the goal have been approved by the internationally recognised Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
By joining the net zero standard, we are also taking responsibility for not only emissions in our own operations but also for the CO2e footprint of the goods we sell in our stores – from their production to their consumption or discarding by the end-user.
2022: Salling Group invests 2.4 billion in energy transition
In the spring of 2022, we invested 2.4 billion, a record-breaking amount of money, in energy transition, which will pave the way for more renewable energy and reduced energy consumption.
The investment comes with a number of concrete initiatives to lower energy consumption and send green electricity across Salling Group's three markets in Denmark, Germany and Poland.
2021: Salling Group commits to the Science Based Target initiative
In 2021, we joined the internationally recognised Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and committed ourselves to the Paris Agreement's ambition to keep global temperature increases below 1.5 degrees. Specifically, we are committed to SBTi's Net Zero Standard and thus the goal of net zero emissions by 2050. However, we have already decided that our climate footprint must be halved by 2030. The first step has been to calculate the full baseline for our entire value chain's CO2-emissions and map where the greatest reductions are possible. We are now in the process of reducing emissions from farm to fork.
Salling Group expands Denmark's charging network for electric cars
With the desire to give Danish consumers the opportunity to speed up the green transition, Salling Group has entered into a collaboration with the charging operator Clever to create Denmark's largest charging network for electric cars.
The agreement involves setting up lightning chargers in our car parks to reduce the distance between electric car riders and the nearest charging station.
The roll-out has already started, and by 2025 we expect to have set up 1,000 charging stations at Bilka, Netto and føtex stores across the country.
2021: Netto paves the way for a national climate label after testing Skyen ('The Cloud')
In 2021, Netto became the first retail chain in Denmark to test a climate label: Skyen (‘The Cloud’). The Cloud is a climate label with the aim of guiding customers towards less climate-damaging food alternatives.
After a successful test period, the positive and negative experiences were passed on to politicians, customers and the rest of the industry with the hope of creating common climate labelling across future retail.
The test period showed that climate labelling is requested among consumers. The experiences from the work with climate labelling shows that more information makes a difference to customers as they are given the opportunity to choose between the same types of products on a more informed basis.
2020: Netto builds grocery stores with a focus on the climate
In 2020, Netto opened the doors to the first Netto Green Store, which embrace climate considerations both inside and out.
The store at Bygholm Bakker in Horsens is an innovative building built in recyclable materials of easily separable wooden constructions and with large windows that draw daylight into the store. Outside, the store is equipped with grass areas and solar cells on the roof. With a special energy system, the store is partially self-sufficient with renewable energy. The building has also obtained DGNB Gold Certification, which is the most recognised environmental and climate certification available in Denmark.
The Netto Green Stores' energy consumption is on average 40% lower than in a regular store, and they also emit 65% less CO2.
